The MSPN meets daily on 3862 kHZ at 17:30 hours Central Standard Time or 18:00 hours Central Daylight Time and whenever needed for emergencies with a backup frequency of 7238 Khz. This net is very well operated where stations from each county are called and so far I am the only regular from Lowndes. There are about 80 daily check-ins from MS and surrounding states. More info at www.arrlmiss.org/ms_section_phone_net.htmlIf you are an early riser there is another net called Magnolia Section Net at 3862.5 kHz 6:00 AM (7:00 AM on weekends and holidays). Here we have about 35 daily check-ins.

How is the net operated and what traffic or news or training is conducted otherwise when not in emergency operations? I guess what I am asking is if it is a sit and wait an hour to give your call and then turn off the radio?

The purpose of the nets and how they are operated are pretty well described on the arrlmiss.org website.
For anybody looking for a rag chewing net this is not the place, but pleasantries are exchanged and possibility for after-net discussions are there. After a while you are recognized by others and you recognize them, you might meet them at a hamfest or other events. I being a new ham with very little hands-on training it fulfills several purposes.
Also I get the opportunity to test my different 80m antennas and adjust them for the best reception. Tune in one morning/evening and listen, if you don't like them, there is always the big knob.....
